STUNNING. Period.
I’m happy to be the first to rate this wonderful LCD. I’ll be short and to the point, and maybe come back and supplement this review after a few more weeks of use.

Aesthetically, the TV is clean and elegant. Love the touch of red. Love the crystal base. Love the fact that it swivels. It’s a beautiful piece of equipment, and looks a good bit more modern than the more curvilinear A model. I’m very happy I waited for this one.

Set up was a snap. Took me about 2 minutes to connect the base. It took longer to remove the stickers. The manual is on a little USB drive that plugs in the side of the TV, but I haven’t bothered with it yet.

The picture is stunning, right out of the box. Absolutely beautiful. Only adjustment I made was to turn the brightness down slightly, as I have a very dark TV room.

The on-screen graphics and menus are both intuitive and elegantly designed. I hate when the industrial design is carefully considered, and the on-screen UI is forgotten. That didn’t happen here. Both are wonderful.

I somewhat skeptically connected my camera card reader to one of the USB plugs on the side, and inserted a memory card from my father’s camera. He’d hoped to show us pictures, but didn’t have a plan for how. Perfect timing, as the TV had arrived that day. The TV recognized the card, and very quickly we were watching pictures and video in high res on our new TV. Fantastic.

Less than perfect: the sound. Actually, it’s a bit of joke. But, that doesn’t effect my rating because I don’t feel that the internal speakers are really meant to be used w/ a TV like this. I’m using a 5 channel surround system, but before I hooked it up, I heard the speakers. It makes sense that they wouldn’t sound good since you can’t even see them.

Also less than perfect was the delivery process via this company, CEVA/Eagle. Note that they claimed to have contacted me via email to set up delivery, but I never rec’d anything. They didn’t call. So, I had to google them and call them. Plan for this! Stay on top of them. The driver called me no less than 4 times during the day, each time making up some goofy excuse for being even later. I think he was watching the NCAA tournament at a bar somewhere. But, in the end, it arrived 1 day late, and in perfect condition. So, I don’t care. And, I can’t take away a star from the TV due to the delivery service. I just think Amazon needs to communicate the process better with it’s customers and make sure that CEVA does a better job too.

Anyway, Amazon’s price is great, the TV is fabulous. Enjoy!

Beautiful, Feature Rich and Future Proof
I returned the 40A630 that I bought last month because of one dead pixel, and I replaced it with this spanking new model (date first available at Amazon on March 9th). This LCD TV is really beautiful – the “Red Touch of Color” is not quite subtle but I’m sure you’ll like it as much as I do (it will match whatever furniture you have). The picture quality of this model (100,000:1 contrast ratio) is quite stunning compared to the 40A630 (40,000:1) that I returned.

This TV offers the newly introduced Internet@TV. Currently, only Samsung B series has this feature, other manufacturers will incorporate this feature in their future models. This feature is better than the first generation Infolink (RSS feed) that’s offered by the A series. You can actually add all sorts of TV widgets, which in the next couple of months will include some of the big online content providers (NY Times, Netflix, eBay, Twitter, Google, etc). Currenly, only Yahoo widgets are available (news, weather, Flickr, finance). You can connect your TV to the internet via ethernet, or you can plug Samsung’s Wireless USB adaptor (sold separately) in one of the 2 USB ports.

Other notable features:
a) 2 USB 2.0 slots – I use one slot for the included flash drive which contains the TV manual, and the other slot for my 8GB flash containing pictures, music and video.
b) Content Library – Intenal flash with preloaded content like cooking recipes, artwork screensavers, games, and pre-school children contents. You can download more contents from the internet. I don’t find this feature interesting. I tried it twice during the first week, and I haven’t explored it again since.
c) Swivel base – I think Samsung is the only brand that offers this feature, which I find really useful.
d) Firmware upgrade via direct internet connection.

Get this TV, you won’t regret it. Your friends will be envious if you tell them about the great features of this TV, which are not yet available in LCD TVs prior to March 2009.

I bought this from Electronics Expo, one of the most reliable merchants of Amazon. The company is located in New Jersey — a) quick delivery because I live in New York City, and b) no sales tax because I live in New York.

Amazing TV
You have to get one of these! We received our unit yesterday afternoon and was watching HD within 5 – 10 minutes. Setup is very easy (CEVA set up TV) and after connecting HDMI cables, you’re good to go. Color, picture, clarity, detail – absolutely amazing!!

No motion blur, no jerkiness or fuzziness, no broken frame appearance. Glare does not appear to b an issue as we have one end of our room in 70% glass. SO far, on a sunny day, no problem.

The “B” model is physically different than the “A” model. The frame has a slight Vee at the bottom of the unit and the base is now rectangular with a 2 inch clear post. The TOC red is nice – sort of dresses up the unit.

We had never seen one of the models, so made the purchase cold. My wife and I cann0t be more pleased with the buy. We sat, almost open mouthed last night watching a movie. I have never seen her impressed over a TV set, until now.

CEVA kept my unit in Sacramento, Ca. for 5 days before delivery. They did deliver before the window of time closed on the stated delivery date. However, they noted, as in the prior review, that I had been contacted for delivery. I had not, so had to get thier info to make contact and arrange delivery. The delivery team did an excellent job, set he whole thing up for me and made sure I was satisfied.

Blu-ray (Samsung P-1500) works great and “Anynet” feature works great. I have not had to touch one control on the tv for any adjustment. Speakers are fine, unless you are an audiophile, or want movie theater sound effects.

Excellent TV and highly recommended!

Samsung’s Fabulous B630 Non-glare LCD HDTV
Being the first to review the 2009 Samsung LN40B630 on Amazon was purely an accident in that I actually bought the new Sony KDL-40V5100 on April 2nd. At that time, the Samsung B650 had just come out, but its high gloss panel would not have performed well in my brightly lit room. My high definition projection TV had kicked the bucket after 8-years, but I rarely enjoyed watching HD because the daylight glare would wash out the picture. The Sony’s non-glare screen performed well except when the picture would black out during dark movie scenes. I discovered that many of the V5100 series have had this glitch and Sony had no fix for it at that time. To Best Buy’s credit, they cheerfully exchanged the Sony under their 30-day return policy and delivered the Samsung B630 model which has a non-glare screen and is similar to the popular B650.

My expectations of the new Samsung were that it would perform much like the Sony. I could not have been more wrong. The B630 was like viewing another huge leap in a television experience, while the Sony seemed to be of past technology. The depth and breadth of Samsung’s visual color tones are astounding and mesmerizing. A perfect example of that came from viewing scenes of the Caribbean Sea. The Sony could not match the Samsung’s Wide Color Enhancer 3 processor with its three dimensional qualities and vibrant tones of turquoise, sea green, cobalt blue, coral pink and white sand clearly seen under the sea. It literally was like being there.

The Samsung’s dynamic contrast of 80,000-1 was visibly superior to the Sony’s 50,000-1 and convinced me that Samsung’s contrast rating was more than a marketing numbers game. The viewing angle of the Sony was horrific when moving away from center by seeing flesh tones morph into green. Samsung’s viewing angle was far better by maintaining the proper color tones, but it did lose contrast and brightness. Of course, a slight turn of its swivel base helped to alleviate Samsung’s viewing angle issue.

The downside to Samsung’s advanced technology was that every movie appeared as video and lost its magical cinema quality. Sony was superior in dealing with this issue. To address that problem, the backlight and contrast settings have to be toned down to soften the picture and to preserve a film’s attributes. Most importantly, an adjustment to the 120 Hz Motion Plus feature must be done in order to keep movies from appearing surreal. While some recommend turning the 120 Hz off, I found video blurring far too annoying and placed the Auto Motion Plus to a custom setting of 6 for blur and judder reduction. That seemed like a good compromise without losing much of the film’s realistic movement. Experiment with every adjustment to find your best settings and calibration instructions are easily found on [...]. It all came together beautifully for me and hopefully this information can be helpful to you.

One bad design feature was the power and channel functions on the TV itself. You cannot see where they are unless you have light shining directly on them. As long as you use only the remote control, it may be a non-issue. By-the-way, in case you were wondering how effective the non-glare screen was on the Samsung B630; it was perfect. I experienced crystal clear high definition TV — Day or Night.

An excellent LCD HDTV at any price!
I recently purchased this item locally but am so impressed by the TV that I felt I should post my impression for others trying to decide where to spend their hard earned money, especially these days.

First, I would recommend that you to your local electronics store and look around and see which sets grab your attention as what is best to my eyes may not work for you. In my case I was somewhat limited in selection since the TV must fit into a TV cabinet that we own, so 40″ was my absolute max. This criteria limited me to Sony, Samsung, and Vizio (in order of price point). A local warehouse club had the Vizio and a comparable Samsung (ln40b610 vs. ln40b630) for side by side comparison, and simply put there was no comparison what-so-ever. The Samsung wins hands down in terms of picture clarity, overall brightness, and contrast. The 80,000:1 contrast on this TV really shines. The Samsung to Sony comparison was a bit tighter as both units offered incredible picture quality and features but again the contrast ratio on the Samsung just made everything appear more pleasing to my eye. Given this, we purchased the Samsung and haven’t looked back. Every time my wife and I watch a Blu-ray movie we are even more impressed with the picture quality! Seriously, this is a great TV at any price. The only TV I looked at that had better contrast was the Samsung LED (3,000,000:1) model but the price difference was just too much to justify.

I do have to agree with other reviewers regarding the “Auto Motion” settings producing images that are almost surreal. I have found that setting this on the middle setting produces the best results for me, but I have not played much with the custom adjustment mode yet, so I will hold off on a final review until I have had more time to tweak.

Amazing picture with tons of options for tweaking
My old RCA 27″ tube finally died, so it was time to enter into the world of HDTV’s. After a ton of research and price hunting, I settled in on this 40″ model for the full 1080, 120hZ experience (plus a smokin’ deal from Amazon helped seal the deal).

First one arrived shattered, so that was a bit of a buzz kill. Fortunately the delivery includes set up & power up, so we immediately saw that the thing was destroyed. The delivery crew took it back with them and Amazon got another one out. The 2nd one arrived in perfect condition, and after getting DirecTV out to install the HD dish, I’ve been on HD for about a week now. I know this is not part of the product review, but Amazon’s customer service was excellent in this matter.

All I can say is that the picture is more than I anticipated, having never owned an HDTV before. The clarity is unreal, the colors and images just pop off the screen.

Sports and movies are incredible to watch. I do see how some folks are a bit taken aback by how crisp movies appear (as if in 3d), and they have to get used to the look of cinema based stuff. It doesn’t really bother me that much, as I know that’s the byproduct of HD. It’s crisp. It’s clear. But I set the 120Hz option to standard, and I find that works well enough for my eyes. There are certain scenes in some movies that just look surreal, but not in a bad way (at least to me).

The amount of control that this TV gives you to adjust the picture is great — you can stick with one of their built in “modes” (dynamic, standard, natural or movie) and then customize every aspect of the picture as much as you wish. I spent a couple of days just playing with the settings & calibrating. The dynamic mode is way too bright, and gives results that are just not natural. I’ve found that the “natural” mode works best for me, with additional adjustments in contrast & brightness to enhance the blacks as much as possible. The “standard” mode allows you to push the blacks even more deep, so I’ve been going back & forth between both that & “natural”. If desired, you can adjust for gamma, white balance, flesh tones, so you can go pretty deep.

I do have to say that at this point, the 120Hz feature doesn’t really appear to add that much. I did read in a number of reviews that it is not easy to discern the difference between 60 and 120Hz in most viewing situations. A fast millisecond response rate is where you want to be, and with this TV’s 4ms response time, there’s no issues. And for me, I don’t mind having a little blur on fast moving scenes.

I have watched movies & sports on my dad’s samsung 37″ HDTV (LN37A450), which is a 60Hz model, and have to say that the picture looks just as incredible as on this 40″. So if you’re looking to save a couple hundred bucks, don’t get too hung up on the 60Hz/120Hz issue. Go with the 60Hz, and you’ll be plenty satisfied. But if you can get a deal for a 120Hz Samsung for under $1k, it’s worth it. Always nice to have extra options, as long as you’re not breaking the bank to do it. I just have not seen a major difference between the two. Having said that, I’ve not watched any blu-ray movies yet, but have watched a couple of HD movies from DirecTV. But most of the complaints about the 120Hz are with people who think it makes movies look weird — so again, 60Hz won’t kill you there. If you’re a gamer, you may want to do some more research on it. I don’t own an Xbox, Playstation or Wii, so I can’t speak to that.

Many complain about the sound on this TV as well, but I found that with the surround turned on, the TV gives off a pretty decent output. I hooked up the stereo to the tv, so usually have the audio coming through the full stereo. But on it’s own, the TV isn’t too bad, especially for such a slim profile.

The touch of color is a really nice feature as well — it does give the TV a very sophisticated look. I was concerned that the red may be distracting, but it’s tastefully done and very subtle.

Overall, I don’t regret purchasing this TV – I could’ve saved some $$$ by going with the B550 model and sticking with 60Hz, but for the price that Amazon had at the time($999), I felt that I’d just get the extra options.

For what it’s worth, I believe that this TV is also an ‘A’ panel. I’m not even sure if there are ‘S’ panels being made anymore. If the last letter of the serial number is how this is determined, then I don’t see ‘S’ panels on any of their models. But whatever type panel it has, it doesn’t matter. It looks fantastic, and even more so after being adjusted/calibrated best to display in my living room. There is a review out there (hi Matt!!) that gave the tv one star because of this panel issue…but said little to nothing else on how the tv actually was performing. One of the complaints about ‘A’ panels was that the ‘off angle’ viewing was very poor. First of all, I don’t know why you’d want to view these TV’s from too severe of an “off angle” — you want to be in front of it as much as possible — maybe 45 degrees off…but I’ve also inspected it from severe angles (pushing 160-170 degrees) and the picture holds up just fine.

This model is fantastic. I still can’t believe my eyes when watching some stuff…there was a show about the Grand Canyon on National Geographic channel this weekend. All I can say is, wow. Unbelievable. The epic Wimbledon final between Federer and Roddick was also fun to watch.

No regrets here at all. Great TV. Brilliant picture, with plenty of options to tweak to your preference.

OH MY GOD AMAZING TELEVISION
This television is truly something to be admired. I’d say it’s also a work of art.

I have a high definition cable box with an HDMI cable to the TV and the HD channels are superb. I mean, the picture is totally 100% crystal clear. I have windows behind me and somehow there is virtually no glare. Yes, the TV looks better when it is dark outside versus light outside but it’s perfectly great when it is light outside.

I’m writing this review on my couch. My laptop is connected to the TV via a VGA cable with a wireless keyboard and mouse. Unfortunately my laptop does not have HDMI but I can see very well with the VGA cable. Needless to say, I am going to become much more lazy as a result of this TV.

The 40 inches is great for my viewing pleasure. I’m sure 46 is bigger but I am 100% content with 40 inches. It comes down to price. I did not want to pay more than $1,200 for a TV (that’s $100 a month for 12 months using the Amazon Store Card). So this was a no-brainer for me.

If you are in the market for a TV, I highly suggest this one. It is truly a wonderful TV.

The “only” thing that isn’t 100% perfect is the sound. The sound is good mind you, but it is not as perfect as the picture. But for the record, I have not played with the equalizer which people report helps the sound.

This is an amazing TV.

UPDATE 6/12/2008: This is still a remarkable television. I don’t have any complaints about it at all. Even the sound is perfectly fine. However, you MUST either have a Blu Ray player or an Upconvert player with an HDMI cable to get the full benefit. Everything looks and sounds perfect on this TV.

UPDATE 7/13/2008: The TV is still perfect so just buy it already! I actually bought a 26″ 3-series for my bedroom. I don’t notice too much of a difference; I am happy with this “worse” TV as I am with my living room TV (this one). Samsung makes an excellent LCD television!

FINAL UPDATE 3/19/2009: Well I’ve had this TV about a year and I can honestly say it still is great. The sound is great, too. But… in retrospect, when it comes to TVs, bigger is better. A year ago this TV was $1,200 and I just paid it off this month. But if I could have gotten a 42″ or a 46″, then that would be better. Don’t get me wrong, the 40″ is great, but what’s wrong with a few extra inches? Either way you can’t go wrong with the LCD 5 Series from Samsung.

Beautiful Picture – Great Service
One of my biggest purchases with Amazon and it went as smooth as possible. The picture on this TV is amazing. FiOS HD can be almost too much pretty on one screen with this TV, it’s a bit overwhelming at first. Standard def channels are of course a less clear but better than expected. The only issue I have with this TV is the length of time to power on and off. You also have to point the remote just right sometimes or the function won’t register. Small issue though, hardly worth docking points off this unit.

The menu is wonderful and gives complete control over settings. Each input saves your settings too! The AVS Forums have a great thread concerning settings for each input that should be checked out and tested. A little tweaking got the black levels and skin tone just right.

I haven’t tested the VGA input, but my Macbook Pro connected with a DVI-HDMI cable is amazing! My FiOS is connected via HDMI and as I mentioned, quite beautiful. I also have a Wii hooked up via component. The Wii maxes out at 480p but really shines on this TV despite the 1080p native res. Don’t be fooled though, the picture is a little fuzzy but through some tweaking you can get a great picture without springing for a separate upconverter.

Shipping was of course through Eagle/CEVA. Make sure to call and verify they’ve got your info. They didn’t have my phone number on record at first so I corrected that. My delivery man was Rick. He was great! He called to setup the appointment, was on time, very delicate with the unit, and very personable. I couldn’t be more pleased.

UPDATE: Just wanted to mention the finish of the screen. Originally, I was debating between this model and the older lnt4069fx due to the matte screen. I chose this model for several reasons. First, it was cheaper. Second, I decided 120Hz wasn’t worth the extra 400 bucks. Third, the screen isn’t glossy but it isn’t matte it’s more of an in-between, satin-like finish that works great in my TV watching room that has a glass front door to the outside and 2 windows. Glare isn’t a problem at all for me even with lamps behind me. It really is great. The ultra gloss on the 600 and 700 models are way to much for my multipurpose room. Hope that helps anyone on the fence that cares about gloss vs. matte finishes.

Caution: Known HDMI issue
I purchased the Samsung LN40A550 40″ 1080p LCD HDTV on July 14, 2008. It’s my 4th big screen HDTV purchase but my first 1080p box. Agree with other reviews in that it has an absolute beautiful picture at a very good price. There are many features I love about this TV, but here’s the problem….

I purchased a Samsung 1080P8 upconverting DVD player with an HDMI (version 1.3) cable. When i watch a DVD, i get a ’searching for signal’ message that appears on the screen for about 5 seconds. This happens once every minute or two! I went into full troubleshooting mode by replacing the cable, the DVD player, and everything else i could think of. I tried the DVD player and HDMI cable with my other HDTV sets and it worked great. After calling Samsung technical support and getting to their level 2 support in New Jersey, they acknowledged there is a problem with the HDMI connection with the TV but they do not have a firmware fix for it yet. They suggested i wait for the firmware fix (release date unknown), or return the TV and try another one. I opted to exchange the TV for the same model. I received it today and (unfortunately) it has the same problem. I will now return the TV to Amazon, get a refund, and purchase a different model.

Bottom line, if you don’t use or need the HDMI connection, you should be fine with this set. However, if you plan to use HDMI I’d look to a different model until this is fixed.

Update on July 28 – After further troubleshooting, the HDMI problem is with the combination of using a Samsung LN40A550 40″ 1080p LCD HDTV with the Samsung 1080P8 upconverting DVD player. Together, they do not work. Separately, the upconverting DVD player works perfectly with other TVs, and the Samsung LN40A550 works fine with another upconverting DVD. I purchased the same brand so i would eliminate this exact problem! Who would think that Samsung has not tested their own product compatibility before they go out the door? Exremely poor quality control – my guess is they have a problem with their ‘anynet’ software feature, but it still blanks-out with ‘anynet’ turned off. Purchase the Sony upconverting DVD player with this TV and you’ll be OK. However, now I personally don’t trust Samsung.
